We'd Rather See Them Stand: The Honest Truth About Our Treecycling Philosophy
If you’re in the timber world, you hear the word "sustainable" a lot. It’s on websites, in brochures, it’s become a bit of a buzzword. But for us, sustainability isn't a trend. It’s the entire reason our workshop exists.
So, we want to be honest with you about what it really means. It all starts with a simple truth: We'd rather see them stand if we're honest.
A healthy, standing tree is a beautiful thing. But when a tree in Suffolk or Norfolk has to come down, whether it’s storm-damaged, diseased, or unsafe, that’s where our work begins. We usually see too much potential being wasted.

The Problem We Saw: The Wood Chipper's Fate
For over 20 years, we've processed wood through chainsaw carving, tree surgery, and now our own sawmill. In that time, we’ve seen countless magnificent trees turned into nothing more than mulch. It breaks our heart a little. A tree that stood for decades, maybe even a century, reduced to wood chips in a matter of minutes.
We knew there was a better way. A tree that has to be felled still has an incredible story and a wealth of beauty locked inside it. Our philosophy, the idea of Treecycling, was born from a desire to stop that waste and give that tree a second, much longer life.
Our Zero-Waste Promise: From Plank to Firewood
When a log comes into our workshop, we respect it. We make the most of every single part of it, because it deserves nothing less.
- The Best Bits: The main trunk and best limbs are milled into the wide, characterful planks and book-matched sets you see on our website.
- The Offcuts: Nothing is wasted. Smaller, interesting pieces are perfect for the woodturners and carvers we supply, so we turn them into turning blanks, pen blanks, and carving blocks.
- The Leftovers: The little that is left, the bits that can't be used for anything else, are split and seasoned to become firewood.
Plain and simple, we use it all.
The 50-Mile Tree: Our Commitment to Local Sustainability
Another part of being honest about sustainability is being transparent about where our wood comes from. Almost every single tree we work on has been sourced within a 50-mile radius of our workshop here in North Suffolk.
That means a very low carbon footprint for recovery. You’re not buying timber that’s been shipped halfway around the world. You’re buying a piece of your local landscape, a tree that might have grown just a few villages away. It has a local story, and it supports a local business.
More Than Just Timber
When you buy a piece of wood from us, you’re not just buying a material. You’re buying into a philosophy. You’re supporting a system that respects nature, reduces waste, and values community.
You’re helping us make sure that when a tree does fall, its legacy isn't lost in a chipper. Instead, it becomes the table your family gathers around, the shelf that holds your most treasured books, or the bowl you turn on your lathe.
It gets a second life. And that feels like the most honest and sustainable thing we can do.
