About our business

From Chainsaw Carving to Craftsmanship. Fourteen years ago, Ben Loughrill was already a well known chainsaw artist across Suffolk and Norfolk, transforming logs into intricate sculptures for two decades. But when the physical toll of carving became too much, he saw an opportunity to expand his passion for wood into new horizons. What began as timber sales alongside his carvings soon blossomed into a full time calling when the perfect workshop became available. A space that could house both heavy machinery and delicate craftsmanship.

Ben's journey in woodworking began serendipitously during a summer holiday in Cornwall, where he met a roadside chainsaw carver who taught him to craft mushrooms. This chance encounter sparked a 20 year journey into woodwork, developing the root of Treecycling UK.

Meet the Team

Family is the heartwood of our business. We are a husband and wife team with occasional extra help from our children.

Ben Loughrill

Founder

The timber expert with 20 years experience in arboriculture and woodworking. His vast knowledge of wood species, drying techniques, and crafting methods forms the backbone of our operation.

Nokomis Loughrill

Founder

Nokomis oversees every aspect of our operations, from customer communications to final finishing touches. Her meticulous attention to detail ensures each piece meets our exacting standards before leaving the workshop.

The Treecycling Philosophy: Honouring Every Tree

Our name says it all. We believe in giving trees a second life. Too often, magnificent felled trees are reduced to wood chips or firewood. We see potential where others see waste. As Ben often says: "I'd rather see them stand if I'm honest" but when trees must come down, we ensure their story continues.

Every piece that leaves our workshop carries a provenance we can trace back to its origins. We work exclusively with naturally felled trees within a 50-mile radius of our Suffolk base. Usually storm damaged oaks, diseased elms, or trees making way for development. Our relationships with local tree surgeons and forestry experts mean we're often called to recover trees others would discard.

The Art & Science of Timber Craft What sets Treecycling apart is Ben's unparalleled understanding of wood. Honed over two decades of working with hundreds of species. As a local timber expert once remarked: "There's no one in this area who knows timber like Ben."

Our process

Rescue
We collect felled trees, often removing them at no cost to landowners.

Reveal
We assess each log's potential by "reading" its grain and character, a particular skill that takes years to develop.

Process
Using our mobile sawmill, we cut the logs to a specific length and width.

Rest
Timber air dries for two years. This is the secret to stability and longevity in furniture. Transform: We craft wide single slabs, book-matched tables, and custom pieces that highlight the wood's natural beauty.

Sustainability in Action: We make the most of every single tree

Prime timber becomes furniture and architectural pieces We transform off-cuts into woodturning blanks, pen blanks, and carver's blocks Small amounts leftover will become "lucky dip" boxes or firewood We try to minimise waste This approach has become increasingly vital as wood scarcity grows and competition from commercial sawmills intensifies. Where others see limitations, we see possibilities.

Our signature techniques

Book-matching: Creating mirror-image patterns by opening planks like a book.

Spalting: A rare fungus-enhanced aging process that produces stunning, one-of-a-kind patterns.

Bespoke craftsmanship: From 12-seater dining tables to woodturner's blanks, we machine to order.

More Than Furniture

Creating Connections What truly drives us is seeing how our pieces become part of people's lives. Like the customer who discovered we'd crafted a table from a tree that once stood in his childhood village. Through our provenance records, he could literally connect with a piece of his personal history.

As Nokomis beautifully puts it: "How nice it is for us to know that families will make lovely memories around these tables for possibly generations. Something as simple as sitting around a table can be such a special thing."

Our workshop has become a welcoming space for wood lovers. Visitors often look "like children in a toy shop" when surrounded by the scent and sight of so many timber varieties. While we've become accustomed to the aroma after countless hours here, we never tire of seeing others experience that same wonder.

Our Pride

The Brown Burr Oak Masterpiece After two years of patient drying and six weeks of meticulous crafting, our 12-seater brown burr oak table stands as our most ambitious creation. This extraordinary piece showcases everything Treecycling represents: respect for the material, mastery of technique, and the ability to transform nature's gifts into functional art.

Looking Forward

As Ben reflects: "The business is still evolving. It's taken until now to get it where we want it." With sustainability becoming increasingly important and appreciation for handcrafted goods growing, we're excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible with reclaimed timber.

At Treecycling UK, we don't just sell wood. We share stories, preserve memories, and create heirlooms that will gather families around them for generations to come.
